Arizona Dave Lorenz held the 2001 western conference in Flagstaff Arizona. Dave welcomed every one to Flagstaff and the 2001 western conference. The first speaker was Donna Asworth who wrote a book about her experience on a lookout. She did read some short stories from her book Rob Hoeye did a power point presentation about the NHLR web site that he maintains as web master. Carol and Rob Hoeye did a presentation on panoramic photography. The first part of the presentation was showing how crews in the early 1900's did the photos. The next part was showing how Rob takes panoramic pictures today. This program was presented by using power point Barb Zinn from Dinosaur National Monument did a photo presentation on fire towers in DNM, plus other fire info with in the national monument. Keith Argow gave a small talk about fire towers that are coming down in the US. He also mentioned that one tower is coming down every week Keith did the Doug Newman award for the west. The Doug Newman award went to Howard Vershoor. Howard presented the Ron Johnson award to Rob Hoeye from Oregon. And this year it was decided to present the award to someone outside of Oregon. This year it went to Ray Kresek Howard also mentioned that Oregon would be manning 98 lookouts this year plus would be building some new ones. Keith handed out sign for the NHLR instead of certificates. The signs would read that this lookout is on the NHLR Dave did a slide presentation on tree towers in the Grand Canyon. These tree towers were built during the CCC era from 1933-1937 Dave gave another slide presentation on lookouts in Arizona and New Mexico. Linda Farnsworth an archeologist with the Coconino NF did a slide presentation on the restoration work being done on the general spring's fireguard cabin. Corey Wong Supervisor of the Kaibab NF did a power point presentation on the fire plan for the forest. Corey also spoke a little about when he was working at another NF he helped restore a lookout on that NF. After the presentation from Corey Wong the business part of the meeting was opened by Keith. The first thing Keith asked was the passing of the winter 2001 minutes motion by Gary Weber and seconded by Pat Lynch all in favor. Gary Weber gave a treasurer's report. At the present every thing looks good, had some problems with chapters, but they are looking good. Keith advised that years ago Steve Cumming gave a loan to the FFLA. Keith advised that the loan have been paid back. NEW BUSINESS Keith asked under financing should a small committee be formed to look at financing and maybe other issues within. Smoke asked if there was a life membership. Gary advised there was one and it was $750. Keith asked about current membership and what is the #. Gary advised at the present we have 775 members but the change with next newsletter with who paid whom did not. Keith advised that we have been getting 3-5 new members from the web. Rob Hoeye gave the election report for 2002 election. There are 3 positions Eastern Deputy chair-chairman-treasurer. Also advised that would needed nominations by 10-1-01 so they could be put in the newsletter. Keith advised he would run for chairman. Revolving fund Keith has been working to get some directors for some states. He has one director for Georgia. The US Forest Service has a millennium program with money to do some thing dealing with fire. Keith advised that looking for a partner to do some out side funding. Howard asked Keith about the National Historical Lookout Register. People have been asking Howard why is historical if it is not. Keith advised that it is historical or an historical site. Howard advised that some sites are not historical. Keith advised that he would check in to it or change it. Ray Kresek asks Keith about the certificates for the towers on the NHLR. Keith advised that he could not reproduce that certificate any more, So he came up with a metal sign that could be put in the tower or on it Keith advised that he is making a certificate a little different. There was a small discussion about the certificates and there was a motion to keep the old certificates. Keith asked that one of the Bylaws was that directors must have 10 members to be a director. It was asked should new directors be a director but not a voting one. With a small discussion it was decided that directors should be full directors. Rob Hoeye asked if there was any problem with the Bylaws that were put on the web. There were no problems with the Bylaws There was a discussion on sites for the Jan 2002 conference but none were set in stone. Keith asked for a motion to do a phone conference but that was turned down by the directors. The business part of the conference ended around 1700 The evening was free.to do anything, A group of us decided to take off to O' leary lookout. The tower was constructed in 1959 and is an USDA-FS CL100-1. The tower stands 31.6 ft high On Saturday morning Dave welcomes every one and advised what was going on for the day. The first thing on the agenda was proclamation declaring June 2,2001 Wildland fire fighter Day. Paul Summerfelt from the Fire Mgmt Office-City of Flagstaff read the proclamation. H .B. "Doc" Smith Ecological Restoration Institute- Northern Arizona University. Doc spoke about ponderosa pine restoration and stewardship in the Southwest. Ray Kresek did a review of his report on the year 2000 wildfires in the Northwest. After Ray gave his report Gary Weber made some comments about Ray's report and some of the things he ran into on fires in the northwest during the summer of 2000 Peter Mallory Executive Director of the Hall of Flame Museum in Phoenix gave a talk about the museum and the new exhibit that is being worked on for wild land fire fighters that will be opening shortly. Paul Summerfelt from the Flagstaff Fire Dept gave a report on the fuel Management program in the city of Flagstaff. After Paul's report Keith and Dave handed out certificates to representatives from the Coconino and Kaibab Natl Forests for Lookouts that were put on the National Historic Lookout Register.After the presentations there was the auction and Saturday's meeting was adjourned, After lunch there were fire trucks displayed in the parking lot of city hall of Flagstaff. There were fire trucks from the City of Flagstaff, Kaibab and Coconino National Forest and the Hall of Flame Museum in Phoenix. After looking at the fire trucks a group of us head up to Elden lookout just above the city of Flagstaff. The tower was built in 1977 and is a R6 flat manufactured by the USDA-FS CL 100-1, it stands at 54 ' at an elevation of 9299'above sea level. After the tour of Elden lookout every one went to Dave and Judy Lorenz's hose for a barbecue. On Sunday everyone meet at
the town hall to car pool for the tower tour. The tour would consist
of 5 lookouts in the Coconino National Forests. STOP-2 Lee Butte STOP-3 Hutch Mt STOP-4 Buck Mt STOP-5 Apache Maid The day ended with every one saying good bye and hoping to see every one at the next western conference. ALL INFO ON THE LOOKOUTS WERE FROM DAVE LORENZ INFORMATION THAT WAS HANDED OUT AT THE CONFERENCE.
