Lookout Restoration Grant

Kelly Butte, Washington

The FFLA Restoration Grant Program's third award for the year will go toward the restoration of Kelly Butte Lookout, on the White River Ranger District of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie NF. Project Manager (and Western Washington FFLA member) Bob Adler received the $500 grant, as well as a grant from the Chuck Butler Fund. The Forest Service had applied for $16,000 in RAC funds for the project, but was only awarded only $8500, and that not available until 2007. In the meantime, the L-4, built in 1950, is in dire need of a new roof.

Roofing materials had previously been donated, but unfortunately the cedar shingles were burned in a bonfire. It appears that they may be replaced, but the timing is uncertain. The grant funds will be used for other prep work leading to the main project in 2007-2008 when shutters and catwalk will be replaced, and windows, siding, and interior restored in preparation for the rental program.
