Deasey Lookout from the Air

Deasey Mountain Lookout, T3 R7 WELS, Maine

In 2003, the land that Deasey Mountain Lookout resided on was purchased by Roxanne Quimby from Hancock Timber Resource Group. In the second half of 2004, members of the International Appalachain Trail/Sentier International des Appalaches (IAT/SIA) took the initiative to begin a project to repair the Deasey Mountain Lookout. This effort was in anticipation of including the Deasey Summit in a new trail section of the IAT/SIA through the mountains East of Baxter State Park.

The lookout was in fair shape prior to repairing, but IAT/SIA members replaced portions of the roof, roof shingles, all 4 tie-down cables, door and window repairs, and the entire structure was given a fresh coat of paint. The work was performed by IAT/SIA Board members with the new landowner supplying funding for the materials. Board members participating were: Will Richard, Don Hudson, Walter Anderson, Dave Rand, Susan Goulet, Torrey Sylvester and Dick Anderson.

The remaining work (cable and paint touch up) will be completed in 2006. This effort goes a long way toward preserving our historic Fire Lookout heritage in Maine.

Ed Werler, a former watchman of Deasey Mountain, authored a book on his experiences as a lookout on Deasey including much history of the Katahdin area. The book "The Call Of Katahdin" can be found in the FFLA Store.
