  NEWS RELEASE
East Mountain Receives Grant

The East Mountain Lookout Project, sponsored by the Central Idaho Cultural Center in McCall, was the recipient of the second FFLA restoration grant.

The unique lookout, near Cascade, was purchased from the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association and sits on four acres of the Boise National Forest, under permit to the CICC. The CCC-built lookout is the last unmodified lookout of this design. The two-story log structure with basement is surrounded by a concrete catwalk. The logs in the basement, below the catwalk, need replacing. The two stories above the walkway are of thirteen-inch diameter logs, approximately 21 feet in length; several of these also need to be replaced. Time and harsh weather conditions have made these logs structurally unsound.

Proposed work will begin as soon as logs and funding are available, ideally in the summer of 2002. Both log acquisition and funding sources are being sought at this time. Two independent written evaluations have been made regarding the log replacement needs.

Goals and activities for East Mountain in 2002 include:
1. Renew liability insurance
2. Apply for additional grants to fund log work
3. Re-institute web site, link with FFLA
4. Continue recruitment of volunteers for work and hosting
5. Display interpretive materials and brochures
6. Inspection and maintenance / restoration work
-install reproduction bed on ground floor
-paint floor and interior walls of ground level
-replace glass panes up and down stairs
-replace twin mattresses on upper floor bunks
-install solar light fixture
-repair and paint cabinets
-repair snow shutters and re-hinge snow door
-furnish lookout with chairs, desks, dishes, etc.
-replace (or make a repro of) fire finder

UPDATE NOTICE: East Mountain Lookout gone
Last night (6/26/02) around 7pm, a lightning started blaze burned East Mountain Lookout to the ground. I would like to thank you and your organization for all its help and advice. We are still stunned and very sad over the loss of this beautiful lookout
