Notes

  • 1910-1940
  • An observatory for tourists was located on the summit in 1879. In 1911 it was placed on the NH Forestry Commission roster of lookout stations. The steel tower had been built in 1904. It remained in service until 1940 when it was replaced by the lookout on Mt. Prospect. It appears that the tower actually belonged to William S. Phillips and his family, though the state and the federal government contributed to its operation.
