The
summer eastern conference was held on August 11-13 at the new Division A headquarters
in Andover, NJ. State Fire Warden Maris Gabliks welcomed everyone to NJ and the
new division A headquarters, Also was present was division warden Mike Hennessey
was there and welcomed everyone to NJ and the new division A headquarters also.
Maris and Mike gave a brief over view about the state of NJ and use of fire towers
and how they play a big part in fire detection in the state of NJ. After Maris
and Mike finished with there talks every one sat around talked about fire towers
and enjoyed every ones company.
On Saturday the 11th was the business meeting,
Directors present was Chairman Keith Argow, Eastern Deputy Chair/ Southern New
England director Henry Isenberg, NJ director Bob Wolff, Pennsylvania/ Keystone
director Steve Cummings, Historian/ Archivist Bob Spear. Bob Wolff welcomed everyone
to the new division A headquarters as state director of NJ; Bob also gave a tour
of the new facility.
Keith got up and spoke about his trip to CA and seeing
a few lookouts in 2 ½ days. Keith had a few things that he wanted to cover.
1. Showed the group the summer edition of Lookout Network newsletter that would
be coming out shortly. With Gary busy on fire assignments Keith received a copy
of the lookout network newsletter so he could get it to the printers. 2. Spoke
about the new magazine that will be coming out by NWOA geared to forestry and
also will cover more forest fire topics. 3. Keith mentioned about how at one time
we were loosing 1 fire tower per week now we are loosing 1 every 10 days.
After
Keith finished he opened it up to the floor for any comments. Keith made a presentation
to Henry Isenberg of all of Dave Hilton's info about Maine towers to pass on to
Bill Cobb our webmaster. Bill is the new director for Maine. Henry spoke about
the FFLA web site and asked for any comments and suggestions to help improve the
web site.
After lunch there was discussion on some topics -
1.
To have the Board meeting in NC
2. Were to have the next summer eastern
conference in 07
3. Sub chapters or groups under state chapters. In January
07 will be a end of the experiment and Keith is not sure if it is going to work
out or not There was a discussion about that topic.
4. The last topic that
was discussed was how to get out to the public about fire towers and fire lookouts
in their state After the
discussions every one loaded up and headed to Bud Lake to the Bud Lake Fire Tower
a 7x7 60'aermotor tower. From Bud Lake tower we headed to Knolton fire dept for
Div A section 3's pig roast. Bob Wolff is the field section warden for that section.
After dinner we headed to camp Taylor were some times Bob Wolff some times holds
his monthly section meetings. Camp Taylor is a public campground with Lakota Wolf
Preserve. The wolf preserve has 3 different types of wolfs tundra, timber, and
arctic wolfs plus they also have bobcats and foxes in another part of the compound.
The wolf preserve is located in the back of the campground area and gets a lot
of visitors from the campground campers. After our tour we headed back to Div
A office in Andover and called it a night. Sunday started at the div office
in Andover to head to a few towers Ramapo tower which is 7x7 50' aermotor tower
re-erected in 1983. Bear fort tower 7x7 80' Marshall / McKklintock. And Greystone
tower 7x7 92' aermotor built 1937. The day ended with FFLA members heading home
and Bob Wolff heading to a fire in his section and getting on it around mid night
on the 12th.
