Vermont Chapter Report
2010

It has been an exciting year here in the Green Mountains with the roof being replaced on the  Stratton Mountain Fire Tower, which was accomplished through a joint effort by the USFS and Green Mountain Club.

The scheduled Airlift was postponed due to strong winds but re-scheduled for October 13. The new roof was examined by both Mark Haughwout and myself prior to its’ installation and we were extremely impressed with the rugged  one-piece construction.

Further work was performed on the Tower with the wooded stairway  and landings being replaced  as well as new railings installed.

More work is planned for the Summer of 2011.

Kevin Williamson (our Northernmost Member) reports that the tower roof on  Bald Mountain in Westmore is still in need of replacement also, Mark and I have visited  Okemo Tower in Ludlow and found that much work has been recently done by a Private Contractor  including re-wooding of the stairs and landings, lightning protection and railings installed.

The roof is still in need of replacement, but plans are being discussed as  this report is being prepared.

Below is a photo of the Stratton Mountain Roof being placed by the Helicopter taken by Summit Caretaker Jeanne Joudry.
