Forest Fire Lookout Association Inc

Southeast US Chapter Report
2005

Membership: The division membership is 29, down from 41 last year. However, 10 were spun off into the new Virginia Division, leaving 31. The comparison should be 29/31, a decrease of 2.

2005 Meetings: SEUS Division Director Keith Argow and the Virginia Division hosted the National Board meeting in Roanoke, VA (January). Argow also attended the 2005 Summer meeting in Rhode Island (August) and the Western Summer meeting in Idaho (September).

Division Development: Good progress was made in 2005 in sponsoring the development of new FFLA State Divisions in the southeast and eastern states. One more "Area Representative" (Alabama) was appointed to service as a focus for fire lookoutissues within their states and to promote membership in FFLA. As membership numbers grow in each state, and leaders agree to serve, several should become a new State Division.

Current reps are: GA: Don Shedd; MS: M.T. Parker; MO: Jim Lyon; OH: Andy Penfield, and WV: Ralph Glover. Maria Schielt now represents Alabama. Florida, Texas and Ohio are close to gaining voting Division status.

Accomplishment of Work Goals set for 2005:

-Grow membership by 15%. Goal was 6 members, we lost a net of 4 and recruited 2.
-Secure Storage site for salvaged fire towers: Temporary site established in Alabama.
-Continue to assist in two restorations, and start a new one. No report, but progress made.
-Complete historic lookout inventory, with pictures, for Virginia and West Virginia. In progress.

Plan of Work for 2006:

-Establish two new voting State Divisions
-Establish three new local chapters to support lookout restoration efforts
-Recruit 5 new members
-Locate coordinator for on-going disposal of up to 200 fire towers in North Carolina and attempt to save some on location if possible.

Respectfully submitted: Keith Argow, SEUS Division Director, 11 January 2006
