Restoration Grant Program Report
2006

Four Restoration Grants were awarded in 2006, $500 each for a total of $2000:

1) Mount Danaher Lookout, California
The Amador-Eldorado Unit of the California Forestry and Fire Protection in Camino was granted the first 2006 award for the installation of new shutters and stair treads on the 100-foot tower.

2) Crossroads Fire Tower, Arkansas
The City of Hamburg was the recipient of the FFLA's second restoration grant award in 2006. The city has also received a grant from Home Depot and is pursuing additional grant opportunities. Phase one of the restoration project will include the replacement of the guy cables, repair of concrete footings, and repair and replacement of wooden steps and landings


3) Kelly Butte Lookout, Washington
The third award for the year went toward the restoration of Kelly Butte Lookout, on the White River Ranger District of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie NF. Project Manager (and Western Washington FFLA member) Bob Adler received the $500 grant, as well as a grant from the Chuck Butler Fund. A new roof was installed in 2006, and windows were prepped for removal. The Forest Service was awarded $8500 (out of a requested $16,000) in 2007 RAC funds for the project.which will include replacement of shutters and catwalk and restoration of windows, siding, and interior in preparation for rental.

4) Beebe Hill Fire Tower Facility, New York
The local Beebe Hill FFLA Chapter was awarded the program's fourth award in 2006. Bill Starr, FFLA-NY Director, is chairing the project. The $500 grant is to be used toward the completion of restoration of the Beebe Hill fire tower facility, including the observer cabin. Work is ongoing to restore the observer cabin interior to make it a museum. It is hoped that the cabin will be fully restored by the summer of 2007. Replacement of broken window panes and rotting window casements are some of the immediate tasks to be undertaken on the cabin. Tower restoration tasks will include replacing all bolts and nuts, raising railing heights, and completing painting.

A grant request for Page Pond Hill, NY, was withdrawn, but is expected to be re-submitted soon.
