Ohio Chapter Report
Early 2004

Tower Progress
I have visited all but 5 state documented tower sites in Ohio (38), 3 other non-state documented (federal) towers sites. 13 towers still up, 1 being relocated for the 3rd time total is 14.

I will be meeting soon with the state of Ohio forest fire director to discuss the fate of the remaining state towers, 7 in all. We have discussed over the phone the steps required to renovate the state towers. An engineering survey was done 3 years ago stating $70,000 per tower to make them public accessible. After further discussion with a tower expert this was assumed a 200% load rating, more than what the original load rating was. Mohican site will be the first site in Ohio to get this upgrade and with current budget, be the only state tower in the future to be renovated. I guess more pressure on the Ohio chapter to get on the ball eh?

I will (phone call return permitted) discuss with the Wayne National Fire Forester concerning the federally towers.

Membership
I have 10 members; I need to follow up on some other leads and get a contact list and membership together. Will try to organize a first meeting or web meeting in the coming summer months.

Other
Until then, I will continue to update the Ohio web site with additional information and Summer season pictures.

There are 3 towers on private lands that may need to be dismantled and mothballed b/c of imminent danger, Keystone (deep pit mining; viewable on panoramic video); Sugargrove (bottom cross bracing rusted and current land owner health); Woodsridge (Current site development)
