| The state still owns and maintains 21 firetowers as listed in our annual Forest Firewardens Emergency Directory. We currently have 16 full time fire observers; also part timers that man the vacant towers. Recently all the towers have been painted the traditional NJ alternating orange and white paint scheme. The wooden steps and landings have all been replaced with expanded metal. New heaters have been installed. The towers in NJ continue to provide critical detection, dispatch and communications in the fight to protect life, property and forests from the ravages of wildfire. Bob
