Kentucky Chapter Report
2005

The Kentucky chapter has been working with the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department on the preservation of the Hickory Flats Fire Tower. The cab was rust proofed and painted this fall by members of the fire department. The Cabin roof repairs are complete. The site was visited by the Kentucky Heritage council in august and placed in the Kentucky Historic Resource Inventory (Site Number: RW 149).The history of the tower has been researched by Rachel Kennedy a Research and Planning Coordinator with the Kentucky Heritage Council. She is fairly certain the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 578, F-4 was responsible for the construction of the tower site. The tower also hosted the Rowan County Historic Club. The group of 27 plus visited the site and pledged their support to the project.

Three members of the Kentucky Forest Fire Lookout Association; Charlie Mcdaniel, Dowe Blevins (Fire Chief of the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department) and I, visited Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. The park was the site for the annual Kentucky CCC Alumni Reunion. I presented a PowerPoint program on the Hickory Flats Fire Tower along with an overview of other Kentucky towers. The Kentucky parks service recently secure funds to restore the Pinnacle Knob Fire Tower located on park property .I e-mailed the Kentucky Commissioner of Parks and expressed my support of the project. On September 21, 2005 the local lookout association presented a program on the fire towers to the Morehead Rotary Club.

The Hickory Flats Lookout tower group was also funded with a mini grant through the Forest Fire Lookout Association which was used to purchased paint and materials for the tower/ ground house. The 2005 year was productive with some small steps toward a statewide association. The core of the Kentucky Forest Fire Lookout base continues to be members of the volunteer fire department. We hope to continue the restoration of the Hickory Flats tower and encourage groups across the Commonwealth of Kentucky of the important of saving fire towers.

Thank You
