Kentucky Chapter Report
2004

Hello from Kentucky

The Kentucky Chapter of the FFLA is working with the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department to complete repairs on the Hickory Flats Lookout Tower.

The CCC Era Guard house nows as new windows and doors. Thanks to Danny Blevins Sr and members of the fire department. The roof repairs are almost complete.

The Tower cab (7x7) has a new floor and a local glass company is cutting the replacement glass for the cab as a donation. The America Flag flys once again from the tower flag pole. The flag has been absent for almost forty years. The tower was decommission by the U.S.Forest Service in 1966.

I have developed a power point presention on the hickory flats tower and presented this as slide show for the Rowan County Historical Society back in October.

The group has offer their help in securing a state historical roadside marker for the tower.

We continue to work with the U.S. Forest service on road improvements to the tower.

Most of the FFLA brochure has been distributed.I have not been able to spend the time needed to survey the remaining towers accross the commonwealth. My main goal has been the rehabilitation of hickory flats tower and ground house.

A local firewise council has been formed and we hope to work with that group on some public relations events to promote fire safety using the fire tower as prevention tool.

The nucleus of the KyFFLA continue to be members from the Route 377 volunteer fire department.

Thank You
KyFFLA
Danny Blevins
