6 lookouts were staffed in 2010. Devils Head on the Pike National Forest, Deadman Lookout on the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest and Benchmark Lookout on the San Juan National Forest. Zenobia and Round Top Lookouts in Dinosaur National Monument were staffed as was Park Point Lookout in Mesa Verde National Park.
Squaw Mountain Lookout 11,500’ on the Arapaho National Forest had two volunteer workdays during the summer. The first day saw the completion of the linoleum install on the lower level floor. The inside walls downstairs were re-stained. The downstairs door was rebuilt and framed repairing damage incurred by vandals over the winter months. The framing around the door to the historic privy just below the lookout was also rebuilt, painted and the door re-hung. The stairs to the tower were partially painted as well.
On the 2nd workday (weeks later) volunteers stained the trim upstairs, painted the ceiling in the tower and finished repainting the stairs. The flooring in the privy was completely re-built in preparation for an incinerator toilet that has since been installed. Once again, the framing around lower door was rebuilt after vandals kicked it in.
There will be one more workday, spring 2011 before Squaw Mountain is finally introduced into the Forest Service rental system under the direction of Clear Creek District ranger Dan Lavato and Nicole Malandri. Nicole will directly manage rental of the lookout and has been working diligently raising grant funds for new shutters. Thanks also go to Bill Gherardi and the Colorado Forestry Association for years of work getting this lookout re-outfitted and maintained.
Chimney Rock Lookout in the San Juan National Forest was dismantled in September. It is hoped that this lookout will be reassembled in an educational center or another suitable location. It was dismantled very carefully and packaged for helicopter transport. (See attached photos)
Events planned for 2011
In the Spring of 2011, the chapter will host what should be the final work day at Squaw Mountain Lookout before it goes onto the rental system. New shutter installation and improving the railings are priorities.
Rather than hosting the chapter annual meeting inside, it was voiced that a day trip to Devils Head Lookout would be enjoyable in 2011. Due to the high snowfall this year, this event will be scheduled in late June or early July. (TBA) This will include a group hike to the lookout and a picnic lunch.
