Volunteer Lookout Rehab Offer

June 24- 28, 2002

The year is fast disappearing already! I would like to submit a volunteer offer for distribution to FFLA members and friends for a rehab project that takes place during June. I am indeed running a little behind in submitting this offer, but your help with this would be appreciated.

This summer I have been assigned the task of coordinating the historic rehabilitation of a 65 year old fire lookout cab in the mountains of central Idaho. It's a single story wood frame structure with a wood shingle hip roof known as a "L-4 Type", and unfortunately, has been heavily vandalized. It is named Granite Mountain Lookout, and it is near the rural community of Gibbsonville in Lemhi County, Idaho. The full work plan involves replacing the roof shingles, striping the lead-based paint, sanding and painting the exterior and interior, rehab of 19 large wood sash windows, and the construction of 8 protective shutters for the windows. Some of this will be done by Forest maintenance workers and other parts by a volunteer work crew. I am now recruiting volunteers for the latter effort.

The main avenue that I am using is a volunteer program that the Forest Service has called Passport In Time, or PIT. Their National Clearinghouse is located in Tucson, AZ. Through them I have scheduled a week-long session during the last week in June for the main volunteer work crew. The intentions are to rehab the windows, construct the shutters, and paint the exterior/interior. The specific dates are from Monday June 24 to Friday June 28.

This is an invitation to join this volunteer rehab effort. This invitation is also extended to any of your associates, family members, or FFLA members as well. If anyone would like to take a week-long vacation in the mountains of Idaho doing hands-on hammer/nail and sand/paint rehab work please give me a phone call or reply message. Applications will be
accepted through June 15, 2002.

The address for the Passport In Time Clearinghouse is: P.O. Box 31315, Tucson AZ 85751-1315. Their phone number is 1-800-281-9176, and their web page url is: www.passportintime.com

If there are any questions regarding this volunteer effort, please contact me. Thank you.
