Pig Iron Lookout, Diamond Lake Ranger District, Oregon

A rare opportunity to volunteer in a Forest Service lookout is available from mid-July through September on the Umpqua National Forest. The Pig Iron Lookout is located 1.5 air miles east of Tokatee Lake and a 45 minute drive, or 15 road miles, from the Tokatee Ranger Station. The lookout is accessible by a narrow, graveled forest road, and the 14 by 14 foot building sits below the summit to get a better 180 degree view of the Diamond Lake Ranger District. This voluntary
position will be a solitary one. It requires the ability to use a Forest Service two way radio and firefinder as well as read a map. Training will be provided. Other potentially useful skills would include handling minor carpentry, greeting visitors to the lookout, and providing information on lookouts and local forest recreational activities. This is a rustic volunteer assignment. There is no potable water, no power and no telephone. Cell phone service is possible, depending on carrier. No volunteer reimbursement is available beyond fulfilling a lifelong dream to staff an historic fire lookout.
